At HEAT, we take pride in the dedicated individuals who make our community a safe, supportive, and empowering space for young people. In this edition of "Meet the HEAT Family," we introduce you to Jessica Michel, our HIV/STI Testing Coordinator, whose passion for her work is changing lives every day.
Meet Jessica Michelle
Jessica Michel is the driving force behind HEAT's HIV/STI testing initiatives. As the Testing Coordinator, she ensures that testing services are accessible in a variety of settings, from basketball games to yoga classes, to intimate community gatherings. Her role is not just about administering tests—it's about fostering trust, educating, and making testing a normalized and accessible practice.
"I love what I do. It makes me feel like I'm an asset to my community, especially to younger Black women," Jessica shares.
Her dedication is evident in the way she carries out her work, ensuring that young people have the knowledge and resources they need to take control of their health.
A Day in the Life at HEAT
Jessica’s day-to-day work is dynamic and community-centered. She coordinates testing at various outreach events, ensuring that sexual health services are available in non-traditional but welcoming environments. By bringing testing to where people are, HEAT is making it easier for young individuals to access these critical services without stigma or fear.
Overcoming Fear: A Message for Young Women
For many young people, the idea of getting tested can be intimidating. Jessica acknowledges this fear but encourages them to push through it.
"Being afraid is valid. When I first started getting tested for STIs, I was also nervous. But knowing your status provides you with the confidence to make the best decisions for you—whether in your sex life or your healthcare."
Her message is clear: testing is empowerment. It allows individuals to take charge of their health, make informed decisions, and protect themselves and their partners.
Resources for Young Women at HEAT
HEAT is more than just a testing center—it’s a hub for comprehensive health and wellness services. Jessica highlights some of the resources available for young women:
PrEP & PEP Linkages – Access to medications that help prevent HIV transmission.
Mental Health Services – Support for emotional and psychological well-being.
Gender-Affirming Care – Inclusive and affirming healthcare for individuals of all gender identities.
A Welcoming and Safe Space
One of the standout features of HEAT is its inclusive and supportive environment
"At HEAT, you will find every type of person on staff. Everyone is warm, welcoming, and kind. You'll always be met with a smile. It’s a very comforting environment."
This commitment to fostering a safe space ensures that everyone, regardless of background or identity, feels seen, heard, and valued.
Jessica’s Message to the Community
Jessica’s advice to the community is simple yet powerful:
"Be proactive in your sexual health. Get tested, use protection, and take the necessary steps to keep yourself and those around you safe. When you’re proactive, you protect not just yourself, but your entire community."
At HEAT, sexual health is about more than just testing—it’s about education, prevention, and empowerment.
